How to Engrave Stone
![]()
Mechanical Engravers
A mechanical engraver from Suregrave will produce deep engraving in stones such as sandstone and slate with relative ease, harder stones such as granite or marble require more care. Using the tool path module you can produce V-Carved or flat, deep engraved effects. SureLab will automatically create several passes at incremental depths which will aid cutter life. The machine profile should be set at "Standard Speed" machine profile. The cutters should be ground as if for stainless steel unless you require a V carved effect when V routing bits should be specified.

The 2516i and 4824i were purpose designed for "all-materials" and as such suit this application. Both feature an electronic surface setting block and a mechanism that allows the spindle to "float" the nose cone over plastics or be "locked" for incremental depth engraving into hard materials. An additional benefit of the cutter setting block is it can bridge the gap over previously engraved tool paths allowing tools to be changed mid cycle without risk of changing the depth over the rest of the job
For high volumes or 30% increase in productivity we recommend the optional High Frequency Spindle and a Mist Lubrication System to increase cutter life. A Cutter Grinder is useful for cutter sharpening and self-sufficiency.

Co2 Lasers
Engraving stone based materials is a great application for lasers. Special types of stone, for instance polished, very dark types, such as granite, marble or basalt create particularly good results. The more homogeneous and fine-grained the stone, the better the results achieved with the laser engraver. Another excellent material is white marble - The laser engraver produces a non-contrasting, high quality, lightly engraved effect.
Deep engraving is not possible as the laser beam melts the material, making the result almost indiscernible. The best results in stone engraving are achieved on black, glossy marble without too many distractions in within the material (e.g. flat black would be best).

Fiber Lasers
Trotec fiber lasers are also capable of engraving stone, however the higher cost of this technology means if you are purchasing a laser purely for this task we recommend Co2.
