Anodized aluminium or coated brass: Blacking Fluid
Blacking fluid is a mild acid suspension and is applied with a woollen swab to freshly engraved characters where it oxidises and blackens the base metal. As such it only works on metals that have had a coating removed by engraving such as anodized aluminium or coated brass.
Electrical switches/components: Soft Wax
Soft wax is suitable for characters up to approx. 6mm tall and ideal for electrical switches or similar components. Engrave the plate to 0.3mm (0.012"). brush the plate to remove any sward and rub across the engraving until the letters are filled, excess wax removed with a cloth.
Engravers Brass & Stainless Steel Engravers: Filling Paint (Cellulose)With care it's possible to produce multi colour fills on these materials. Engrave to a depth of 0.3mm (0.012"), brush to remove any swarf. In the case of stainless steel if a cutting fluid was used use cellulose thinners to remove any trace. Use a brush to spread the paint into the engraving. Using a clean piece of card or plastic wipe across the surface removing excess paint and allow to dry to the touch. To finish add the thinners to a lint free cloth, wrap tightly around a square edge then wipe over the plate to remove any haze on the plate. In some cases it may be necessary to repeat the last step. This task should only be carried out in a well ventilated room.
