Direct Part Marking (DPM)

Direct Part Marking (DPM) is a process to permanently mark parts to allow the tracking of parts through their full life cycle.

DPM is used by aerospace, automotive, electronics and other manufacturers to facilitate reliable identification of parts to assist in data logging for safety, warranty issues and satisfy regulatory requirements.

They are many ways to mark parts with a machine-readable code but the fastest for volume production and most reliable for industrial environments is a Microdot marker. Microdot marking delivers high quality marking at high speeds over a wide variety of materials; control of speed, dwell and impact. Thus deformations, tensions and breaks in the work piece can be avoided.

For rating plates or to give a high quality finish the most popular method is by engraving machine, either using a rotating cutter to produce a deep indelible mark or diamond to score into coloured anodised aluminium.

The preferred codes are Data Matrix and QR Code. Data Matrix is preferred by equipment manufacturers and QR Code is commonly used in automotive industries.

Materials
Almost any material, engineered part or rating plate can be dot marked or engraved provided the job can be held securely.

Machine
For engraving applications your choice will be dictated by the size of job, material and required mark.
Industrial part marking applications will be satisfied by a machine from our
Direct Part Marking range.

Trotec Laser Engraver
Lasers can also be used to produce Braille and DDA signage. Use our laser selector chart to determines which laser’s right for you.

Workshop equipment
If engraving high volumes of stainless steel tags a cutter grinder enables tools to be quickly sharpened in-house.

Software
Surelab Lite will provide the basics for text import and engrave but engravers wanting to Scan and Vectorise logos or produce Braille signs should choose SureLab Pro. SureLab is also available in a laser output only module SureLab PhotoLaser+ which includes a host of special features for laser technology.
The range of Suregrave MicroDot markers have inbuilt layout software and fonts.
