With software to generate 3D tool-paths a Suregrave engraving machine is capable of producing complex and detailed 3 dimensional shapes for die sinking, model and mold making.

Simple flat bottomed shapes with an angled edge (draw) to allow molded or cast shapes to be removed or ejected from dies or patterns can be easily produced with SureLab software.

More complex 3D contours will require a 3 dimensional CAD file and the generation of 3 dimensional tool paths and a package such as ArtCAM Pro from Delcam combines design and tool path generation.

Dies, Models and Molds

ArtCAM includes many powerful tools like the envelope distortion tool enabling the designer to manipulate reliefs by stretching and bending the "envelope" that bounds it. Using this technique to make the envelope narrower at one end gives the perspective to a design and in the same manner a curve produced by "bending" the envelope. Applications include jewellery manufacture, coins and medals, signs, mold making, die sinking and wood-working.
