Rotary engraving describes engraving with a rotating cutting tool in a rotating spindle. The rotating cutter cuts into the material to a predetermined depth producing a groove the same shape and dimension of the cutter.  Rotary engraving is suitable for many materials including plastics, wood and metals.

Use this cutter selector chart to choose the correct cutter type, if in doubt call our cutters hotline 0845 850 0002.

Cutter Speed (rpm)

Speeds are for guidance only and will vary with tip size* of cutter, speed of cut and depth of cut; *examples given are for a “B” tip cutter. As a rule of thumb for a larger tip size or deeper cut increase rpm.

Cutter Lubrication Chart

Use this Lubrication chart to choose the ideal lubricant for your application.

Many materials can be cut without cutting oils or lubricants however other materials require lubrication to achieve quality results and extend cutter life. Lubricants cool the cutter and prevent  swarf (chips) from sticking to the cut edge. Using lubrication even on materials that could be cut dry will often improve the quality of the cut and extend cutter life. The following are given as guidelines.
